Greg McElroy broke down Alabama’s offense in an appearance on ESPN on Tuesday.
McElroy discussed how Alabama should be trying to make things simpler on Jalen Milroe moving forward. After a hot start to the season, Milroe has had difficulties with turning the ball over in recent weeks.
“They’ve got to figure out how to take some of the pressure off of Jalen Milroe,” McElroy said. “Now, Jalen Milroe when he’s at his best, he’s as good as anybody in college football. But when he is not at his best, he becomes very streaky. And right now he’s searching a little bit.
“The way you can take some of the pressure off is by getting back to the traditional run game … Take some of the pressure off by just getting back to simple offense and allowing Jam Miller and Justice Haynes, your 2 outstanding running backs, to run behind an ever-improving offensive line.”
Against Tennessee, Alabama deployed a pass-heavy game plan that didn’t end up working. Milroe threw the ball 45 times while the Crimson Tide ran it on just 34 occasions. Fourteen of those rushes were by Milroe, meaning Miller and Haynes accounted for just 20 total rushing attempts vs. the Vols.
It will be interesting to see if Alabama gets back to a more run-heavy approach this weekend against Mizzou. Kickoff for that game is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon.
