Bristol Rovers have reportedly agreed a deal with Fleetwood Town for forward Promise Omochere for a fee in excess of £500,000.
The 23-year-old forward had interested numerous clubs this summer, with Barnsley reportedly interested earlier in the summer, however according to Football Insider, Bristol Rovers have agreed a deal.
If the Irishman signs for The Gas he will become the 11th signing of the summer and the second forward the club has signed after Ruel Sotiriou.
The career of Omochere
Promise, came through the ranks first at UCD before 2018 joining up with the U19 squad with Bohemians. The forward went on to play 48 games in the Irish top flight scoring ten goals and providing seven assists.
He then joined Fleetwood Town in July 2022 and to date has played 62 league games for The Cod’s scoring 11 goals and providing three assists, playing in a variety of different positions.
How did Omochere perform last season?
Last season, the forward started 25 games and came off the bench nine times in the league, scoring six (from 7.31 xG) and assisting once, in a difficult season for Fleetwood which despite an improvement in form were relegated to League Two.
He won 4.56 aerial duels per 90 which compared to other strikers in the league ranked him in the 93% percentile, also having 0.93 shots on target per 90. In total he averaged a goal involvement every 276 minutes.
Good Business for Bristol Rovers?
Promise is heading into the last year of his contract with Fleetwood, so The Cod Army will be getting what looks like a strong deal for them with a very healthy transfer fee allowing them to potentially reinvest in the squad.
For Bristol Rovers, the Matt Taylor revolution continues as he looks to push The Gas up the table after last seasons 15th place finish, and after losing attackers John Marquis as well as Harvey Greenslade this summer, this left Chris Martin as a natural number 9 at the club with Jevani Brown more suited to a second off the striker type role.
Promise is used to playing in a two up front, Matt Taylor towards the end of the season played in a 4-2-3-1 shape, but has on occasion played with two strikers which may suit his game more. While the fee is quite substantial, he may bring different qualities to the Rovers front line complementing the type of forwards the club currently have.
