Middlesbrough held talks with Max Lowe before he opted to sign for Sheffield Wednesday instead, as per The Star.
Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday are both gearing up for the 2024/25 season.
Both clubs will be competing in the Championship once again this year.
Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough finished four points outside the top six last season and they will be hoping to strengthen this summer in order to close that gap.
Meanwhile, the Owls only narrowly avoided the drop beating Sunderland to stay up on the final day. Danny Rohl’s team completed an unbelievable turnaround with all eyes now on them this summer.
Lowe, 27, played ten Premier League games for Sheffield United last season. He played 26 Championship games in the season before, contributing to seven goals from right back.
He is set to become a free agent later this month and in a shock move he is set to move straight to rivals Sheffield Wednesday.
In the most recent update it has now been reported Lowe will sign a two year deal at Hillsborough and he held talks with several other Championship clubs, one of which Boro.
However, it is believed Rohl was the deciding factor as the German coach convinced him to buy into his ideas and commit his future to the club.
The sky is the limit
Momentum is well and truly behind Sheffield Wednesday at the moment.
Rohl seems to have a huge amount of pulling power when it comes to tempting players to Sheffield Wednesday and he is evidently a highly-rated and well respected coach.
Lowe adds Championship and top flight experience, but he also has been there and done it when it comes to achieving promotion. He will be a welcomed addition to their dressing room and will be hoping to play more consistently this season than he did last.
Dusting themselves off
Whilst the defender would have been a good addition for Boro as well, they shouldn’t be too worried about missing out on this one.
Carrick’s side aren’t a million miles away from getting over the line and whilst they do need reinforcements this summer, the feeling is still a positive one on Teesside.
Sheffield Wednesday will almost definitely be in a stronger position this season and they are being tipped by some to make an outside push for the top six.
And Boro will be hoping to do the same thing. It will be interesting to see how both sides start next season and whether either can cement a place inside the play-offs early on.
