Northampton Town defender Sam Sherring is poised to join an unnamed League Two side, according to a report by the Northampton Chronicle & Echo.
Northampton Town are losing the centre-back for nothing this summer. He has rejected their offer of a new contract and is now dropping back into the fourth tier for a new challenge elsewhere.
Sherring, 24, officially sees his deal at Sixfields expire at the end of this month and he is due to become available as a free agent. He has been on the books of the Cobblers since joining them in 2022 and has been a key player for them under the guidance of Jon Brady.
In this latest update regarding his situation by the Northampton Chronicle & Echo, the player is heading to a team in the league below. His next destination is unknown at this stage but is expected to be announced in due course.
Northampton Town man to leave
Losing Sherring is a blow for Northampton Town and they will need to find an adequate replacement.
The Dorchester-born man joined them two years ago and helped them win promotion last year.
He has since adapted well to the step up a division and was part of the Cobblers’ side who finished 14th in the League One table last term.
Sherring has been a key player for Northampton Town in the heart of their backline over recent times and has made 76 appearances in all competitions, 39 of which have come in the past campaign, and he found the net twice.
He rose up through the academy ranks at AFC Bournemouth and was a regular for the Premier League outfit at various youth levels but didn’t play for their first-team.
Instead, he was loaned out to the likes of Weymouth, Torquay United, Accrington Stanley and Cambridge United to get some experience under his belt before he cut ties with the Cherries permanently.
What next for Northampton Town?
Northampton Town will need to weigh up their options now and find someone to step into Sherring’s shoes.
They have a big couple of months ahead on the transfer front as they look to freshen up their ranks.
