Last Friday saw Jamie Lindsay become Bristol Rovers’ 10th and latest signing of the summer but the midfielder certainly appears to be in contention to be amongst the most crucial business the Gas execute over the course of this transfer window.
The likes of Isaac Hutchinson, Ruel Sotiriou and Taylor Moore to name a few are particularly eye-catching arrivals but adding more experience to balance out the youthfulness of Matt Taylor’s side has been imperative for the Rovers boss and, at 28, Lindsay arrives as the club’s eldest signing of the summer which emphasises just how young some of the new arrivals are.
Having spent the past five years at Rotherham United, the Scotsman has three Championship seasons, two League One promotions and a Papa John’s Trophy under his belt during his time in England so far and automatically becomes one of the most experienced individuals in the Rovers roster, a trait that this group desperately needed.
Adding more bodies in the middle of the park was also vital following Sam Finley’s release at the end of last season and Antony Evans’ departure for Huddersfield Town.
There is also a familiarity there with the coaching staff having worked under Taylor as well as assistant manager Wayne Carlisle and goalkeeping coach Scott Brown previously at Rotherham.
Quite rightly there are high hopes for what Lindsay can do in a Gas shirt with fingers crossed that he’ll be given a first run out on Tuesday night at Yeovil Town having attended but not played in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Bath City. However, to get more of an idea of what to expect from the latest arrival in BS7, Bristol Live spoke to a man who watched his five-year spell at Rotherham first hand in the Rotherham Advertiser’s Millers reporter Paul Davis.
“Rotherham historically do very well in League One but struggle in the Championship,” Davis explained when asked about Lindsay’s time in a Millers shirt. “But in the 2020/21 season we were going well in the Championship and he was brilliant in midfield. There was a spell in the January/February where we went six or seven games unbeaten and he was right at the centre of it, man of the match most weeks. Just a real, hard-running midfield competitor who set the tone of the heartbeat of the side.
