Jim Hiller and Morgan Rielly are now linked to Toronto’s most crucial blue-line decision of the summer.

The significant aspect is David Pagnotta’s recent addition. The Maple Leafs are still talking about Rielly, and the discussions seem animated enough that a transaction remains the ultimate goal.

The entire file’s tone is altered as a result. This is not just any old veteran defenseman call. It appears that John Chayka is still searching the market for the ideal hockey transaction.

Despite a lower year by his standards, Rielly remains a well-known figure in Toronto. He had 11 goals and 36 points in 78 games during the 2025–2026 season.

Those numbers aren’t awful, but they don’t hide the overall picture. The entire organization has been forced into change mode as a result of Toronto’s 32-36-14 finish and last-place position in the Atlantic Division.

Here’s where Hiller enters the picture. After Chayka declared the club required an organizational transformation, and a shift of that kind usually doesn’t end at the perimeter of the roster, he was hired as Toronto’s 41st head coach.

In addition, Rielly’s contract is not one that can be readily exchanged. He is signed through 2029-30, so if Toronto moves him, it will make a significant statement about the team’s future direction.

Today, the Maple Leafs have had and will continue to have trade discussions with teams regarding Morgan Rielly. It does sound like the main objective is a deal sometime this summer or this week.

That’s the strongest position right now. The Leafs aren’t looking to sell a depth player to free up some space. They’re putting it through its paces to see if shifting one of their longest-serving core defenders may help reset the blue line in a more significant way.

Additionally, there is still something to sell. When the circumstances around him are ideal, left-shot, 32-year-old Rielly can still move pucks. He has 549 points in 951 NHL games over the course of his career.

This is why the negotiations are so vital. Chayka would not be considering Hiller as a serious candidate for Toronto unless he thought it would be possible to rebuild the team’s roster to suit Hiller’s playing style.

For the Leafs, the risk is equally obvious. You don’t accidentally replace a player with this much usage and history. The return must be immediately helpful, not just later, if Rielly departs.

However, the message conveyed by these talks is quite straightforward. Toronto doesn’t expect that replacing the coach and hoping for the best would resolve all issues.

Morgan Rielly has been on this team for a long time. However, if trade negotiations continue, the Leafs are demonstrating that even one of their most well-known names is now on the table.
