The Giants May Already Regret Rafael Devers And There’s Almost No Way Out

At the moment, trading Rafael Devers appeared to be one of the more dubious actions taken by the Boston Red Sox in Major League Baseball. Sadly, the Red Sox have made their fair share of odd deals lately.

“The Devers trade made sense at the time, giving the Giants the big-name slugger they kept missing in free agency. But in retrospect, the timing looks off. There is no easy way out for Posey, who told local media after the Aug. 3 trade deadline — when he drew largely favorable reviews — he “was glad” to have Devers, Adames and Chapman still on the team,” Grant Brisbee of The Athletic wrote.

The Devers trade wasn’t as dubious as the Mookie Betts trade, but before being dealt, the left-handed-hitting third baseman was among the best players in baseball. The Red Sox’s one plus was Devers’ 10-year, $313.5 million agreement.

Devers has one of the worst contracts in baseball after being transferred to San Francisco prior to the 2025 trade deadline. Let’s fast forward to 2026 and the San Francisco Giants.

He has a 121 OPS+, which is acceptable, but he is no longer the hitter he was in Boston.

According to one report, there’s no simple way for San Francisco to move on from him right now.

“The Devers trade made sense at the moment, giving the Giants the big-name slugger they had been failing to get in free agency. But in hindsight, the timing seems off. There is no easy way out for Posey, who informed the local media following the August 3 trade deadline — when he got largely positive reviews — that he was “happy” to still have Devers, Adames, and Chapman on the squad,” Grant Brisbee of The Athletic said.

It might not be unfair to state that the Giants shouldn’t deal him, or even desire to, but the more fair argument is that they aren’t in a position to win and probably don’t need someone earning $30 million or more per season on their roster. That could eventually lead to a trade if a team is willing to take on that money.

If a team is ready to accept that cash, it may eventually result in a trade.
