Austin to Detroit: Sutter Muzzatti’s First Pro Contract Raises a Major Question.
Before a four-year Division I college hockey career, Sutter Muzzatti spent two seasons playing in Austin. He recently signed his first professional deal.
As a 17-year-old hockey player with a lot of potential but still needing to grow physically and smooth out the rough spots in his game, Sutter Muzzatti arrived in Austin in the autumn of 2020.
He has accomplished both of those things in spectacular fashion six years later.
Muzzatti, who is now 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 241 pounds, has four years of Division I college hockey experience, including one season in the Big Ten Conference.
Muzzatti’s experience has brought him back home. Last week, the 23-year-old Okemos, Michigan native inked a two-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings organization for his first professional hockey gig.
In exchange for future considerations, the Red Wings bought Muzzatti’s rights from Nashville last Thursday. He was picked by the Predators with the No. 143 overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft’s fifth round.
Although Muzzatti did not sign with Nashville by the August 15 deadline, the team kept him on their reserve list instead of letting him become an unrestricted free agent. This enabled them to make the trade and keep his rights.
In Austin, Muzzatti played in 80 games over two seasons and amassed 59 points (17 goals, 42 assists). He was the Bruins’ leading scorer in 2021-22 with 46 points.
After Austin, he played three seasons at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., where he accrued 50 points (19-31-50) and 129 penalty minutes in 78 games from 2022-25. In 37 games, he ranked second on the club with 13 goals and 32 points, and he moved to Notre Dame for the 2025–26 campaign.
