There is no one on the Detroit Red Wings to sign Simon Edvinsson to a new contract extension, and the club seems like a disorganized mess.
The Detroit Red Wings are starting to resemble a disorganized shambles as training camp approaches in just a month. The most recent information comes from Simon Edvinsson’s agent, who claims they are unable to identify who they should speak with regarding a contract extension.
The team still hasn’t secured restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson, has a captain who has asked for a trade and hasn’t been moved, and is now without a general manager.
Insider Bob Duff stated on the Full Press Hockey Podcast that the situation is so messy that Edvinsson’s own agent is unsure with whom he should be bargaining. When he spoke with the Swedish publication Expressen, Agent Peter Werner stated almost the same thing, saying that Edvinsson’s group is patiently awaiting Detroit to recruit a new GM before negotiations can meaningfully continue.
Detroit has around $19.6 million in cap room, with $8-10 million expected to be used for an Edvinsson extension, leaving $9-11 million presently unassigned. No one in the team can sign off on the transaction, despite their financial resources. At the same time, the September 16 deadline to keep NHL players for eight years is approaching. They have less than four weeks to collect themselves if Detroit was hoping to accomplish that with this player. Even worse, they have Shawn Horcoff in place as an interim GM, but they’ve not given him the authority to make any major decisions.
Drafted sixth overall in 2021, the 21-year-old defensemen had a career-high nine goals last season and was second on the squad in average ice time, behind only Moritz Seider. If the Red Wings passed up a chance to finalize a good contract merely because they delayed hiring someone to do so, it would appear extremely harsh. They have Shawn Horcoff as the temporary general manager, but they have not given him the power to make any significant decisions, which is even worse.
