Hockey Nite Punjabi was canceled by Sportsnet. Then Harnarayan Singh spoke, and fans are really questioning one aspect of his emotional response

Emotion overcomes the veteran announcer.

Since nearly two decades ago, Hockey Night in Canada: Punjabi Edition and Harnarayan Singh have stood for something much more significant than just a different method to enjoy an NHL game.

That chapter is now closed.

Sportsnet recently verified that it has terminated its Punjabi-language NHL broadcasts after 18 years, citing audience levels that were insufficient to support the production in the long term. The decision puts a stop to one of the most distinctive and culturally important telecasts in the history of Canadian sports television.

Singh undoubtedly has a very personal feeling for the end of the performance. After the declaration, he shared his feelings in an Instagram message, considering the program’s amazing path and expressing appreciation for the individuals who helped make it happen. Acknowledging the broadcast’s enormous influence on generations of Punjabi-speaking hockey fans and the community that welcomed it, his feeling was one of appreciation and pride rather than animosity.

The beginnings of Hockey Night in Canada: Punjabi Edition may be traced back to 2008, when the CBC started trying out NHL broadcasts in a number of languages, including Mandarin, Punjabi, Cantonese, Inuktitut, and Italian. Singh, who was then a CBC reporter, had the chance to announce games in Punjabi. He made his debut in the Stanley Cup Final of 2008, pitting the Pittsburgh Penguins against the Detroit Red Wings. Punjabi demonstrated the longevity required to establish itself as a consistent component of the hockey scene out of all of CBC’s language experiments.

Ultimately, the show found a new home under Rogers after the business purchased Canada’s national NHL media rights. Singh’s enthusiasm and passion for the program made him its obvious voice, and his influence went well beyond its intended audience.

Naturally, the decisive time occurred in the 2016 Stanley Cup Final.

Singh’s famous call, “Bonino! Bonino! Bonino!” blew up on social media after Pittsburgh Penguins forward Nick Bonino scored a key goal. What was formerly a beloved community broadcast immediately joined the mainstream of hockey culture. Singh and the Punjabi broadcast team were asked to attend Pittsburgh’s Stanley Cup parade, where thousands of Penguins fans celebrated the occasion with them, because the call became so well-known.

However, the genuine value of Hockey Night in Canada: Punjabi Edition was always more than just a single popular call. The initiative allowed Punjabi Canadians to enjoy Canada’s game through a common language and cultural perspective. Singh has previously stated that viewers have informed him that the show has helped bridge generational divides in households by enabling grandparents and younger family members to express their enthusiasm for hockey in a fresh approach.

It also allowed Singh to overcome his own limitations. He transitioned to English-language NHL coverage following years as the Punjabi broadcast voice, becoming the first Sikh broadcaster to call NHL games in English, demonstrating that representation may unlock chances much exceeding the first platform.

There is no doubt that the cancellation is a letdown for the show’s producers and fans. However, as Singh’s heartfelt statement indicates, its history cannot be eliminated by its final sign-off. Hockey Night in Canada: Punjabi Edition opened doors, united families, and demonstrated to a great number of young Canadians for 18 years that there was a place for them in the sport.

Harnarayan Singh’s voice—and that well-known cry of “Bonino! Bonino! Bonino!”—will always be a part of the tale for hockey lovers everywhere.
