The Red Wings may have a wild card general manager target in mind, so forget about the obvious contenders

One of the most crucial choices the Detroit Red Wings have made in recent franchise history is about to be made.

Steve Yzerman is no longer in charge of hockey operations; instead, he has taken on a more advisory position. The organization will be able to make its own imprint with the incoming general manager.

Detroit doesn’t necessarily need to seek for another Yzerman, then.

Greenberg might offer a totally fresh viewpoint.

And that could be exactly what Detroit requires.

The Red Wings may have a new GM before training camp.

The timing here is becoming increasingly crucial.

Elliotte Friedman reported that Detroit has already begun interviewing internal candidates, despite the fact that the Red Wings have spent a large portion of the offseason without a permanent general manager.

Friedman thinks Greenberg is one of the outside applicants.

It doesn’t make much sense to wait until the season has started if the company wants its new general manager to truly have a voice in the team’s leadership.

Therefore, it would be ideal to have someone in place before training camp.

Greenberg makes perfect sense since he wouldn’t merely be taking over a position. He would be inheriting a chance.

Greenberg has established an intriguing history, especially with aiding in the formation of a victorious squad for the Tigers. The squad transformed into a real contender for the MLB postseason after losing 100 games. The Wings are searching for this type of CV.

The Red Wings don’t require any further well-known names.

Someone who is good at making tough choices is necessary.

Greenberg may be the man.

Ducks’ Huge Problem May Also Be Fixed By Dylan Larkin Trade

Greenberg’s inaugural big test may be Dylan Larkin.

And then there’s Dylan Larkin.

According to reports, the Red Wings captain has asked for a trade, placing the new general manager in a difficult situation even before he has formally assumed the position.

That might be Greenberg’s first major challenge.

Does he trade Larkin and hasten a reconstruction?

Is he able to persuade him to remain?

Or does he strike a balance that allows Detroit to stay competitive while rebuilding the roster around younger players?

Those are not simple queries.

It is said that several teams have shown interest in Larkin, but the organization is more interested in acquiring players who are ready for the NHL rather than just gathering draft picks and prospects.

Greenberg’s experience may be useful here.

He must obtain the appropriate return if he believes the Red Wings must proceed. He’ll need to persuade both the club and Larkin that staying is worthwhile if he believes Detroit can continue to develop around him.

Regardless, this is not your typical GM search.

The Red Wings’ appearance for the following five years may be determined by the next person in charge.

That’s why Jeff Greenberg is worth seeing.
