After what the OHL describes as an off-ice training incident, Matthew Mayich is in an Arizona hospital, and the hockey community is offering its support.
Wednesday saw the St. Louis Blues issue a statement saying the team was holding the 21-year-old defensemen “close to our hearts” as he recuperates.
St. Louis chose Mayich in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft. He played four seasons in the OHL with the Ottawa 67’s and is from Hamilton.
He was reportedly hospitalized on August 20 while training for the 2026–27 season in Arizona.
Mayich is listed on the roster at Arizona State University, where a student on the hockey team passed out during an outdoor morning workout.
According to the institution, it is analyzing the conditions surrounding the practice and won’t be revealing the student’s identity.
The hockey community is in disbelief over the startling news regarding Matthew Mayich.
According to Doug Armstrong, the Blues’ President of Hockey Operations, the team is wishing Mayich well and hoping for a speedy recovery as he continues his medical care.
According to Armstrong’s team release, “The whole Blues organization is keeping Matthew Mayich close to our hearts.”
Extending his thoughts to Mayich and his parents, John and Christina, Bryan Crawford, the OHL commissioner, expressed similar feelings.
“Matthew played in our league for four seasons and gained the regard of all of his opponents and teammates,” Crawford added.
Mayich started playing minor hockey at the age of nine with the Hamilton Huskies, now known as the Hamilton Steel Hockey Club.
When he signed with the 67’s in 2021 and when St. Louis selected him in 2023, the group posted congratulatory messages.
It is unusual for a prospect to make news this way, and there has been no official statement regarding the degree of what happened or a timetable for his recuperation.
For now, Mayich’s hometown community, the OHL, and the Blues are merely awaiting updates and expecting favorable news.
