Blue Jackets Make Their Position on Kirill Marchenko Trade Clear
The Toronto Maple Leafs may have to rethink their approach to Kirill Marchenko after Columbus Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell offered a revealing update on the forward’s trade situation.
Marchenko has been linked to Toronto as a potential target, but Waddell’s latest comments suggest the Blue Jackets aren’t prepared to move the 26-year-old winger simply for the sake of making a deal.
Columbus appears to be looking for meaningful value in return.
That could create a difficult situation for Toronto, particularly if the Maple Leafs decide the asking price is too high.
Columbus Isn’t Looking to Rebuild
The Blue Jackets’ position makes sense within the context of their current direction.

Should Toronto Wait?
From Toronto’s perspective, patience could potentially be important.
Marchenko is certainly an attractive player. He is 26, coming off a 27-goal season, carries a manageable contract and would address a need on the Maple Leafs’ wing.
Those factors naturally make him appealing.
However, Toronto shouldn’t necessarily feel compelled to meet an aggressive asking price simply because the player fits its roster.
If Marchenko continues to signal that he doesn’t view Columbus as his long-term destination, the dynamics could eventually shift.
At some point, the Blue Jackets could become more willing to consider different types of trade packages rather than insisting on an immediate NHL-ready return.
That could open the door for Toronto.
The Waiting Game
The Maple Leafs don’t have unlimited trade assets to spend, making the price of any major acquisition especially important.
If Columbus maintains a high asking price, Toronto could simply wait and see whether that number changes as the situation develops.
