The New York Rangers and Utah wasted little time bringing some intensity to Sunday’s matchup.
Shortly after New York took an early 1-0 lead, a confrontation erupted around center ice, with Marcus Pettersson among the players caught in the middle of the gathering.
The Rangers had 2:42 remaining in the opening period when the incident occurred, and the shots were tied 5-5. The game was still very much in its early stages, but the temperature had already risen considerably.
Video from the scene showed players from both teams tangled around the center-ice logo as officials moved in to separate them. Two linesmen were directly involved in trying to break up the scrum while the referees watched nearby.
It remains unclear from the footage what specifically triggered the confrontation. The timing, however, was notable, as the teams had barely had an opportunity to reset following New York’s goal.
Utah entered the contest riding an impressive start to the season. The team had previously defeated Chicago 6-0 and Columbus 4-1, giving Utah a 10-1 goal differential through its first two games.
Meanwhile, New York arrived with a 2-1-0 record. The Rangers had also produced a memorable 5-1 victory over Tampa Bay that included a goalie goal from Igor Shesterkin, followed by a 2-0 shutout against Detroit.
Pettersson, wearing No. 26, entered the game with a $5.5 million cap hit. The 30-year-old defenseman had recorded a plus-two rating but was still looking for his first point of the season through three games.
The Rangers have already shown plenty of physical intensity early in the campaign, with rookie Alberts Smits also involved in a notable collision against Tampa Bay earlier in the week.
New York is scheduled to face the Islanders on Tuesday, while Utah continues its road trip against New Jersey.
There is still a long way to go in the season, but Sunday’s early confrontation suggested neither side was interested in playing a quiet game.
