Bolton Wanderers defender impressed by squad competition

GEORGE Johnston believes fierce competition in the Wanderers squad is the most crucial ingredient of an automatic promotion chase.

Ian Evatt added eight new players over the summer and has not ruled out the possibility of bringing in more before the transfer deadline at the end of the month.

Johnston missed the whole of last season through injury but has been impressed by how the squad has evolved since he was last actively involved.

“It is something a squad looking to get out of this division needs,” he said. “Players have to be pushed every day and can’t get too comfy in their roles.

“You look around in training and we have pretty much got two 11s and anyone can slot into anyone’s position and it doesn’t make us any worse or any better, we just know our jobs and can go out and get results.”

Wanderers go to Charlton on Saturday looking to preserve an unbeaten record at the Valley which stretches back a decade.

Johnston was disappointed to have dropped two points against Wrexham at the weekend but remains confident that the team has made a positive start.

“To get a win away from home on the opening day of the season was a good start and even though we feel we could have got more (against Wrexham) you look at a clean sheet and take the positives from that,” he said. “We’re undefeated, so we move on to the next one.”
