The Philadelphia Phillies were one of the best teams in baseball for a majority of the 2024 season. Unfortunately for them, they fell flat on their faces when the postseason came around so none of their success truly mattered.
Heading into the offseason, the Phillies were reportedly looking to shake their roster up a bit, even exploring the idea of trading All-Star infielder Alec Bohm. But the Phillies haven’t done anything crazy yet, instead trading for pitcher Jesús Luzardo.
They were rumored to be in on free agent Alex Bregman, but FanSided’s MLB insider Robert Murray doesn’t think it’s very likely unless the Phillies clear money elsewhere first.

“There has also been speculation connecting Bregman and the Phillies, but it’s highly unlikely that Philadelphia would get involved unless the team successfully trades Nick Castellanos or another big salary,” Murray wrote.
The Phillies will likely hold onto Bohm and as a result, will likely avoid spending $200 million on Bregman. It doesn’t seem as though the Phillies are going to be offloading any of their huge contracts either, so Castellanos is probably bound to stay in the City of Brotherly Love.
With that in mind, Bregman is likely to land with a team that has a bit more money to spend than the Phillies do. The Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and Toronto Blue Jays all make much more sense for Bregman than the Phillies do.
Never say never, though.
In a surprising move that is shaking up the landscape of the MLB, a prominent insider has revealed that the Philadelphia Phillies have made the decision to part ways with one of their highest-paid stars, worth an eye-popping $200 million. This bold step is expected to have far-reaching ramifications for the team’s future, as well as for the broader baseball market.
Sources close to the situation indicate that this player, whose hefty contract has been a significant financial burden for the Phillies, is no longer in the club’s long-term plans. The decision comes after months of speculation surrounding the star’s performance, leadership in the clubhouse, and his overall fit within the team’s evolving roster construction.
While the specifics of the move are still under wraps, it is clear that the Phillies are looking to reallocate their financial resources to build a more sustainable, competitive team. This could signal a shift in their approach to roster-building as they look to bolster their farm system, target new free-agent talent, and potentially chase after players who can help the team return to championship contention.
For fans and analysts alike, the Phillies’ decision to move on from such a high-profile player is a massive story. With the player’s departure, the Phillies free up substantial payroll flexibility, but the organization now faces questions about how they will replace his production, leadership, and star power in the lineup.
As we await further details on this blockbuster move, it’s clear that the Phillies are making bold moves to reshape their future. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
