Boston Red Sox pitcher Nick Pivetta is expected to leave the team this offseason, but his next destination remains uncertain. After declining a one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer from the Red Sox in November, Pivetta is poised to sign with a new team, and if that happens, Boston will receive draft-pick compensation.
The Toronto Blue Jays are a potential landing spot for Pivetta. Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball recently predicted that Pivetta would sign a $40 million contract with Toronto. Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report echoed this, suggesting that Pivetta could join the Blue Jays’ starting rotation in 2025. Reuter pointed out that while the Blue Jays may focus on strengthening their offense, adding a veteran pitcher to the rotation could also be a smart move.
Pivetta, who posted a 4.14 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 172 strikeouts in 145.2 innings last season, would provide valuable depth to the Blue Jays’ pitching staff. Although he declined the qualifying offer, signing him would require Toronto to forfeit a draft pick. Pivetta has spent most of his time with Boston as a starter, but he also served as a reliable multi-inning reliever during the 2021 playoffs and a portion of the 2023 season. Over five seasons with the Red Sox, he compiled a 37-41 record with a 4.29 ERA and 1.243 WHIP.
