The Philadelphia Phillies have signed Koyo Aoyagi, a former All-Star pitcher from Japan, after failing to secure a deal with Roki Sasaki. Despite the Phillies’ efforts to meet with Sasaki’s representatives, the 23-year-old pitcher, known as “The Monster of the Reiwa Era,” declined their offer. Sasaki ultimately signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers after meeting with other teams, including the New York Mets.
In an effort to strengthen their pitching staff, the Phillies have now signed Aoyagi to a minor-league contract and invited him to spring training as a non-roster player. Aoyagi, recognized for his unique sidearm delivery, is expected to compete for a spot in the bullpen. He has a four-pitch repertoire, including an 87-91 mph fastball, slider, split-changeup, and cutter.
Over his nine-year career with the Hanshin Tigers, Aoyagi appeared in 154 games, compiling a 61-47 record, a 3.08 ERA, and 647 strikeouts. He was a key contributor to the Tigers’ 2023 Japan Series championship, pitching 4â…” scoreless innings in Game 7.
Assistant general manager Jorge Velandia highlighted Aoyagi’s versatility, noting his experience both as a starter and a reliever. If Aoyagi makes the team, he would be the first Japanese player to join the Phillies since 2008 and only the third in franchise history.
With one bullpen spot still open, Aoyagi will compete for a roster position by Opening Day.
