After reimaging Monday, Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman’s shoulder remains structurally sound, confirming a sprain of the AC joint, head coach Mike Elko said on Wednesday’s Southeastern Conference teleconference.
The Aggie coaching staff will keep with the same plan of taking Weigman’s injury day by day. Coach Elko said Monday he expected a selection on who will start Saturday’s game against Bowling Green to be a game-time decision.
“We’re just in the process now of recovery and rehab and trying to figure out where he’s able to get himself to,” said Coach Elko via teleconference. “He was able to throw it around a little bit today, which is kind of how Wednesdays have gone, and we’ll kind of see how it look[s] like through the back end of the week as we make our decision heading into Saturday.”
Weigman first injured the shoulder during the Aggies’ season-opening loss to Notre Dame. He was able to play the first five drives of A&M’s win over McNeese and was pulled from the game in order to give Reed reps with the first-team offense. Thursday before the Florida game, Weigman suffered a setback and was not able to play Saturday, despite being a game-time decision.
In a game-and-a-half of play, Weigman completed 23 of 44 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw a pair of interceptions in the season-opening loss to Notre Dame.
Should Weigman not be able to go, redshirt freshman Marcel Reed would earn his second consecutive start.
Reed completed 64.7% of his passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, in a 33-20 Aggie win. He added 83 rushing yards on 13 carries and a touchdown in route to SEC freshman of the week honors.
“Making his first start of his career, he was able to go out there and we were able to have a lot of success with him, moving the football and moving the team the way we wanted to,” Coach Elko reported Reed’s performance. “Like a lot of kids, there’s plays on tape that you’d like to see improvement on, [you’d] like to see things happen a little bit better, and I think he’s committed to doing that week to week and getting better every time he goes out there.”
Should Reed be the Aggies’ choice; he has a full grasp of offensive coordinator Collin Klein’s offense, the head coach vouched, through an extensive amount of reps during fall camp and through the season.
“I don’t think there’s any part of the playbook that he can’t run,” added Coach Elko. “He’s taken a lot of reps in a lot of what we do. I think, like any personnel decision regardless of what position, there are certain parts of the playbook that probably fit him a little bit better. So, you lean in different directions with him being the quarterback than when Conner is back there as the quarterback.”
