What a week for the Virginia Tech Hokies. It began on Monday with three players announcing their transfers to the program, followed by two more commitments. On Friday, the Hokies made a significant addition, landing experienced wide receiver Donavon Greene from Wake Forest. Greene shared the news on his Instagram that he would be joining Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.
Greene, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound wideout, was a four-star recruit from Mount Airy High School in North Carolina in 2019, and at the time, he was one of the highest-ranked players Wake Forest had ever signed. After redshirting his first year, he started all eight games in 2020, recording 29 catches for 582 yards (20.1 YPR) and two touchdowns.
Unfortunately, injuries sidelined Greene for the 2021 and 2023 seasons, but in 2022, he recorded 37 receptions for 642 yards (17.4 YPR) and six touchdowns. In 2024, he had 23 catches for 380 yards (16.5 YPR) and three touchdowns.
While injuries have been a challenge for Greene, his talent when healthy is undeniable. With excellent size and speed, he is expected to become a key player in Virginia Tech’s starting lineup in 2025. The Hokies are losing significant production from players like Jaylin Lane, Da’Quan Felton, Ali Jennings, and Stephen Gosnell, all heading to the NFL draft, while Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw and Chance Fitzgerald have transferred. However, Virginia Tech has some promising young talent in rising junior Ayden Green and freshmen Brodie Adams and Chanz Wiggins, along with the highly-touted recruit Snook Peterkin, who could play a prominent role in 2025.
The Hokies also added the state of Virginia’s top player, Cameron Seldon, through the transfer portal. Seldon is expected to primarily play wide receiver but can also contribute in the backfield. Greene brings valuable experience to the receiver group and could have a standout season if he stays healthy.
Greene’s connection to Virginia Tech runs deep, as he played at Mount Airy High School with current Hokies RB Tyler Mason and DE Deric Dandy. Mount Airy is just an hour and a half from Blacksburg, making the transition even smoother. Greene is the 17th transfer portal addition for Virginia Tech and the sixth this week.
Welcome to the Hokies, Donavon!
