Swindon Town boss Mark Kennedy has said they are casting their eyes over Declan John on trial following his exit from Bolton Wanderers.
Swindon Town have been taking a look at the left-back over the past month as they weigh up a potential move.
John, 29, cut ties with Bolton Wanderers at the end of last season. His deal with the League One side officially expired in late June and he has since been weighing up his options in the game.
Kennedy has said, as per a report by the Swindon Advertiser: “All of it is true apart from trialist of the week because he has been with us for about a month. He is a really good player and I don’t know how he has not got a club, I don’t know the why because I have not gotten into that.
“Dec has been with us for about a month now and has done really well. He is a really good player, we really like him, he lives locally, and we have given him an opportunity for him to train and get fit.
“If something presents itself going forward then he is somebody that we would like to talk to and I know that we are a club that he wants to play for, hence why he has been here for so long. He is here on merit, he is here because we like him, he likes coming here, will we get something done? I don’t know.”
Swindon Town eye free agent after Bolton Wanderers exit
Swindon Town have a decision to make about whether to offer John a contract.
If they were to snap him up, he would give them more competition and depth at the back.
He rose up through the academy ranks at Cardiff City and played 52 games for their first-team as a youngster, as well as having loan spells away at Barnsley, Chesterfield and Rangers.
The latter lured him up to Scotland on a permanent basis in 2017 and he made 31 outings for the Glasgow giants
Swansea City snapped him up in 2018 and he spent three years with the Welsh outfit, some of which he spent away at Sunderland Bolton Wanderers.
John went on to make 98 appearances for the Trotters altogether and found the net on eight occasions.
He fell out of favour under Ian Evatt though and was released a couple of months ago following a temporary stint at Salford City earlier this year.
What now?
Swindon Town could offer him a route back into the game.
They are back in action this weekend with a home clash against Carlisle United.
Kennedy’s side are 18th in the table.
