Bolton Wanderers have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of goalkeeper Louie Moulden with a report claiming that a League Two side have entered talks to sign him ahead of the upcoming campaign.
The 22-year-old was released by Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers, following the conclusion of his loan stint with Northampton Town.
However, despite an earlier report linking Moulden with a switch to Ian Evatt’s Bolton Wanderers, it now appears as though Moulden will be dropping into the fourth tier of English football ahead of the upcoming campaign.
How did Moulden fare last season?
Moulden began the 2023/24 campaign with National League side Rochdale, 12 months after his last stint in the division with Solihull Moors.
He made 28 league appearances for Jimmy McNulty’s side, keeping six clean sheets and surprisingly provided a handful of assists from the back.
The impressive nature of his performances saw Moulden being recalled by Wolves in order to sign for League One side Northampton Town for the remainder of the campaign.
With the Cobblers, Moulden made an additional 12 appearances and kept two clean sheets whilst competing with Lee Burge as Northampton achieved their highest league finish in over a decade.
Where is Moulden off to?
Journalist Alan Nixon had previously linked the 22-year-old with a switch to Bolton Wanderers in order to provide competition for Nathan Baxter but this now won’t be the case.
That’s according to fellow journalist Pete O’Rourke who has now claimed that Salford City have entered talks to sign Moulden on a free transfer.
Despite being within the compensation age range, Wolves aren’t entitled to a fee because they opted to release Moulden rather than offer him an extended contract.
Salford have recently lost Alex Cairns to Championship giants Leeds United, which leaves them in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer.
