The Atlanta Braves need to secure at least one, preferably two, starting pitchers before the 2025 season begins. In 2024, the team struggled with pitching depth as injuries plagued their rotation, and with Max Fried and Charlie Morton now gone, Atlanta is left with gaps to fill.
Austin Owens of FanSided recently suggested that Los Angeles Dodgers free agent Jack Flaherty would be an ideal addition to the Braves’ rotation. Flaherty is expected to sign for around $100 million.
“Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic report that Flaherty is open to considering short-term contracts with high annual values. This should be appealing to Alex Anthopoulos,” Owens wrote. “Adding a veteran with proven big-league success would be a major boost for the Braves, especially after the departures of Fried and Morton.”
Flaherty would complement reigning Cy Young winner Chris Sale and serve as a mentor to up-and-coming talent like Spencer Schwellenbach. He offers the Braves a reliable, affordable option, providing solid performance without the hefty cost of a top-tier pitcher. Instead of spending $215 million to re-sign Fried, the Braves could secure Flaherty for a fraction of the price, and possibly add a gamble like Max Scherzer to strengthen their staff.
