One of the most intriguing matchups in sports this weekend is set to unfold in San Antonio, as the Auburn Tigers face the Florida Gators in the Final Four of the men’s NCAA Tournament.
While both teams hail from the SEC and boast talented rosters, a key storyline emerging from this game is the relationship between Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl and Florida head coach Todd Golden.
Golden and Pearl share a long history together. Not only did Pearl coach Golden in the Israeli Pro League, but he also played a pivotal role in the early stages of Golden’s coaching career, hiring him as the Director of Basketball Operations in 2014 when Pearl took over at Auburn.
Pearl further supported Golden’s development by helping establish his reputation at San Francisco, which eventually led to Golden’s move to Florida in 2022.
Now, with a trip to the national championship on the line, the two will face off on the grand stage, and ahead of the game, Auburn’s Bruce Pearl shared a strong message about his former player and staff member.
After reflecting on their time together, Pearl shared his admiration for Golden, saying, “Todd was a great point guard, a great scoring point guard, and I’ve always said, don’t be fooled… he’s a good-looking kid, but he’s a tough guy. His teams play hard, they play physical, so don’t let that sheepish look fool you, he’s the real deal.”
The two teams met earlier in the season, with Florida emerging victorious 90-81 on Auburn’s home court. Both teams were the top contenders in the SEC throughout the season and have proven themselves as the last two remaining representatives from the conference.

Now, the winner of Saturday’s Final Four matchup will face either Duke or Houston in the national championship game, which will take place following the Florida-Auburn game.
