The Chicago Bears have named Ben Johnson, the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator, as their new head coach. Johnson, 38, takes over after Matt Eberflus was fired in late November. He becomes the Bears’ 19th head coach in the team’s 105-year history. General Manager Ryan Poles praised Johnson for his leadership, intelligence, and vision for the team, highlighting his strong offensive mind and ability to build a winning culture.
Johnson, who helped the Lions achieve top-tier offensive rankings, including No. 1 in points per game, will be tasked with improving the Bears’ offense. He is known for his innovative playcalling and ability to develop quarterbacks, having notably helped Jared Goff achieve a significant improvement in his performance. Johnson’s offense featured high usage of play-action and pre-snap motion, areas where the Bears are expected to improve.
Despite the Lions’ playoff exit, Johnson’s hiring signals optimism for the Bears, who finished 5-12 last season. Johnson will also be focused on developing quarterback Caleb Williams, who has shown interest in Johnson’s offensive schemes. The Bears are also making moves to build a competitive staff, with reports suggesting former Saints coach Dennis Allen and interim coach Darren Rizzi are top candidates for defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator, respectively.
