He went on to coach for 16 seasons at Kansas State where he led the Wildcats to 296 wins, three Big Eight regular season titles, and two Big Eight Tournament titles. A two-time Big Eight Coach of the Year recipient, Hartman was also named the NABC Coach of the Year in 1981.
Before his tenure at SIU, Hartman spent seven seasons at Coffeyville Community College where he led his team to a NJCAA Championship in 1962 before coming to SIU.
