Another same day that quarterback Spencer Rattler announced he was headed to the NFL Draft, it seems two other Gamecocks’ quarterbacks are on their way out of Columbia.
According to a report Wednesday by The Big Spur, redshirt freshman Tanner Bailey and redshirt sophomore Colten Gauthier are expected to enter the transfer portal. As of Wednesday evening, the decision was not official.
The transfer portal does not open until midnight on Dec. 4, although players can make their intentions known at any time. South Carolina’s season is over, so it’s likely that coach Shane Beamer and his assistants are using this week to conduct exit interviews and meetings with every player on the roster.
As for Bailey and Gauthier, both came into the program as four-star prospects but neither found an on-field role at South Carolina. Bailey never saw action in a game and Gauthier threw just two passes in three seasons in Columbia.
With Rattler, Bailey and Gauthier gone, South Carolina’s quarterback room currently has just two scholarship bodies: Luke Doty (who played receiver in 2023) and LaNorris Sellers, the 6-foot-3, 245-pound freshman who had a few dazzling plays this season.
The Gamecocks are expected to sign quarterback commit Dante Reno in a few weeks, which would help bolster their depth. But coach Beamer could also add an experienced guy through the transfer portal, too. Dakereon Joyner, another USC player with QB experience, is out of eligibility and announced his own decision Wednesday to declare for the NFL Draft.
