Fleetwood Town striker Promise Omochere has been the subject of much transfer talk this summer and another League One club have reportedly joined the race to sign him.
Bristol Rovers are reportedly set to compete with fellow League One side Barnsley to sign the 23-year-old old who currently has one year left on his contract with the Cod Army.
Promise’s Promising Career
Born in Dublin, Promise is a product of League of Ireland side Bohemian’s academy and joined their senior team in 2018. In his first three seasons with the club, the 23-year-old didn’t get many chances to impress and made a total of eleven appearances in two years.
It was in 2021 that Omochere started making an impact for the side. The striker made 43 appearances for the club and scored a total of ten goals.
During this time, his goals helped the Irish side to a runners-up place in 2020 and a place in the FAI Cup Final the year after. In 2022, Fleetwood Town beat several other sides and signed the forward on a three-year deal.
Having fractured his eye socket on his debut, Promise went on to score seven goals in his first season at the club with one of his goals against Championship side Queens Park Rangers in the FA Cup third round.
Then Fleetwood manager Scott Brown had this to say about the forward after scoring his first goal for the Lancashire side:
“Promise is one of the strongest people I have ever seen. If he puts his body in, nobody is pushing him off that ball”.
Despite Fleetwood’s relegation from League One last season, Omochere managed to have a fairly productive season for the Cod Army. With three different managers at the helm across the season, the striker scored a total of six goals in 37 appearances for the side.
With only one year left on his contract, there are likely to be transfer rumours surrounding the promising young forward with Fleetwood not wanting to lose him on a free transfer next summer.
How would Omochere benefit Bristol Rovers?
Bristol Rovers manager Matt Taylor predominantly played a 4-2-3-1 system last season which would benefit the flexibility that Omochere offers.
Despite playing as a striker for Fleetwood, the 23-year-old started his career as a winger and offers pace and power with the ability to run in behind defences while leading the line or on one of the flanks.
Omochere’s six goals in 2023-24 all came inside the box from an expected goals (xG) total of 7.24.
The striker was a difficult opponent for defenders with an average of 8.1 duels won per 90 minutes and testing opposition keepers with an average of 2.19 shots per 90 minutes.
However, there is a lot more that the former Bohemian’s youth player can offer given his total of one assist and an average of 1.40 chances created per 90 minutes.
A move to Bristol Rovers may seem like the logical step for a striker still learning his trade.
Moving to a side who are currently undergoing a rebuild, with eight new players in the building and thirteen departures, will provide the opportunity for the young man to embed himself in a new side and style alongside other new signings.
Adding to this, playing alongside experienced players such as Scott Sinclair and Chris Martin will provide the opportunity to learn from those who have experienced Premier League football.
Having made an impressive impact for a side that was relegated from the third tier, a move to a side that is likely to be pushing into the upper echelons of the same division will provide the opportunity for Omochere to show how much of a promising young talent he is.
