It sure sounds like a Nittany Lions legend is coming back to Happy Valley full time.
According to Penn State’s student news outlets, Onward State and The Daily Collegian, athletic director Pat Kraft teased the hiring of former Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley to the 2025 football staff.

Kraft made the announcement during Thon’s Pep Rally on Saturday with McSorley serving as one of the event’s emcees. Thon is Penn State’s annual 46-hour dance marathon, which raises funds to fight pediatric cancer.
“Nobody knows it yet,” Kraft said at the Bryce Jordan Center. “I’m dropping it right now.”
Kraft apparently didn’t say what type of role McSorley would have, and McSorley has not yet been added to Penn State’s official staff directory.
From 2014-2018, McSorley started 40 games and led Penn State to a pair of New Year’s Six bowl appearances and James Franklin’s first Big Ten Championship. He left Happy Valley with the record for career passing yards (9,899), touchdown passes (77) and wins (31), among other records. Sean Clifford now holds a number of the records McSorley set during his time.
McSorley then joined the Baltimore Ravens as a sixth-round draft pick and has bounced around NFL practice squads the past few seasons.
