With Russell Wilson set to hit free agency, he has been linked to plenty of teams. Some of the teams include the Las Vegas Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, and Tennessee Titans.
There is one team flying under-the-radar, though.
That team, as mentioned recently by fellow TWSN analyst Bill Sparks, could be the Arizona Cardinals. If they bench Kyler Murray, Wilson could find himself in Arizona.
Russell Wilson Will Not Return to the Pittsburgh SteelersÂ
On the bright side, Wilson led the Steelers to the playoffs. What wasn’t so great is that Wilson reached his ceiling with the Steelers, and they lost in the first round to the Baltimore Ravens. For the Steelers’ offense to fully advance forward and not be stuck in the past, they need to get younger at the quarterback position finally and get a long-term starter under center instead of rotating through quarterbacks on a continual basis.
For Wilson, it is clear that the offensive system under the Steelers didn’t work, as illustrated by the reports coming out that Wilson didn’t necessarily agree with the offensive philosophy under Arthur Smith, causing them to disagree and clash at points.
Arizona Cardinals Sign Russell Wilson
On the flip side, the Cardinals could very well be looking for a new quarterback to be a bridge between Kyler Murray and their future franchise quarterback. It’s clear that Murray and the Cardinals might not be a great fit. Once again in 2024, Murray underwhelmed leading Arizona’s passing attack to be ranked 18th while throwing for 3,851 yards and 21 touchdowns with 11 interceptions.
Murray was once again not able to uplift the offense around him like a franchise quarterback should do, and with Jonathan Gannon going 12-22 over his first two seasons, could start to see his own seat get hot.
To avoid that, Gannon could look to bring in quarterback competition to either help Murray or move on from him after the guarantees in his contract are non-existent after 2025.
Drew Petzing is a rising offensive mind in the NFL, and with a quarterback like Wilson that has the dual-threat ability like Murray at a more experienced level would do wonders for the offense trying to find its identity. Wilson showcased his ability to still sling the football, and provide a presence on the ground with his maneuverability to extend plays and gain extra yards as well.
Having a quarterback like Wilson on the team would help the Cardinals’ offense as a whole between his play on the field, and veteran experience. In return, it would be the Cardinals offense that would be the ideal scenario for Wilson to return to form, especially in a division he knows all too well from being on the Seattle Seahawks.
