Former Notre Dame football player Floyd “Max” Redfield will avoid jail time for handgun and marijuana charges stemming from an August arrest in Fulton County.
Redfield, a former safety, was dismissed from the Irish football team after he and four other players were arrested after an Aug. 19 traffic stop along U.S. 31. Redfield pleaded guilty last month to one misdemeanor count of carrying a handgun without a license and a misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession.
On Tuesday, Fulton Superior Court Judge Wayne Steele accepted a plea agreement that called for a sentence of one year and 180 days in jail. Steele suspended the entire jail sentence and ordered Redfield to serve 363 days on probation.
The sentencing brings a conclusion to a case that was drawn out further in December, after prosecutors withdrew from an earlier plea agreement with Redfield because of a failed drug test.
In August, Redfield and his former teammates were in a Ford Focus when an Indiana State Police trooper stopped the car for speeding and driving without proper lights. Inside the car, police found marijuana and a handgun.
Linebacker Te’Von Coney, receiver Kevin Stepherson, defensive back Ashton White and running back Dexter Williams each was charged with one count of marijuana possession.
White and Williams are set to avoid jail under a conditional discharge program. Stepherson pleaded guilty this month and is set for sentencing in April, while Coney’s case remains unresolved.
