Goal-scorer MJ Williams gave his thoughts after MK Dons’ come-from-behind win over Swindon
MJ Williams was relieved to hit the back of the net, albeit via a Laurence Maguire deflection, to make up for Swindon’s early goal in MK Dons’ 3-1 win on Saturday.
The former Bolton man got caught under striker Harry Smith’s jump as the Robins took the lead inside 20 seconds at Stadium MK. But after Kane Thompson-Sommers’ first goal for the club in first-half stoppage time, Williams rifled through a crowd of players to put Dons ahead before Alex Gilbey’s sixth of the season made sure.
“I was made up,” said the 29-year-old. “The start wasn’t what we wanted but I’ve made up for it with the goal. Loz is claiming it too! I was glad I could get good contact on it – I’m sure it hit his head, it’s hard to miss! The main thing was the three points today. It was a good day.
“Swindon did really well for their goal – he’s a massive striker and when he’s climbing above you, he’s hard to stop. But it was probably the best thing that could have happened to us really. We controlled the whole game from there.

“They had a couple of chances, but when we came in at half-time, we knew we had them. We didn’t want the first-half to end, I think we could have gone on to score again.
“The goals then came in the second-half. Towards the end, we could have controlled it a bit more, and we’ll only get better at that.”
Head coach Scott Lindsey said the timing of Swindon’s goal was probably as good as time to concede as they could have hoped for, giving them the longest possible time to turn it around. For Williams, he felt it gave Dons more freedom to dictate the game, especially as the visitors, who remain 22nd after the defeat, sat further and further back in their own half to try and hold on to their lead.
Williams added: “It probably gave us more freedom to go and play, and attack it. I think that’s when we’re at our best, when we play with proper control and freedom to express ourselves and try stuff.
“Swindon did sit off, but we knew our plan today. Some of the patterns of play we did today I think are the best we’ve been all season to be honest.”
