Andy Bedard, Flagg’s former coach, recently discussed his performance this season during ESPN’s Countdown to Gameday, noting, “He could be one of the most improved players this year. He’s facing opponents with more experience, many of whom are older than him. He’s up against great coaches who strategize against him, and you can see how he’s learning and improving from his mistakes.”
If Cooper can continue adapting quickly against the powerful ACC teams, NCAA opponents will face a serious challenge. Still, opposing players and coaches are struggling to devise ways to counter Flagg’s aggressive scoring.
Since his incredible 42-point performance against Notre Dame, Flagg has become an even more formidable force. The Maine native is leading the Blue Devils’ charge toward an ACC championship, consistently dominating games with nearly flawless shooting and impressive rebound numbers.
Bedard also reflected on his time coaching Flagg, emphasizing how his presence elevated the entire team’s morale and performance. He warned other NCAA teams about Flagg’s potential, stating, “He plays like a seasoned veteran, always focused on winning a championship. He’s been this way since I first saw him.”
So, is Cooper Flagg the next big star in college basketball, or just another fleeting sensation? His maturity and mindset, combined with his incredible talent, set him apart from many peers. His near-Naismith Prep Player of the Year recognition and consistent five-star rankings in high school cemented his status as an elite player, leading to his early recruitment by the Duke Blue Devils.
On the court, Flagg continues to impress, as seen in his stellar performance on Saturday night when No. 3 Duke defeated Boston College 88-63. Flagg scored 28 points on 9-of-14 shooting, adding 5 rebounds and 4 assists. His outstanding play helped Duke extend their winning streak to 12 games, solidifying their spot as a top contender for the national title.
Despite Boston College taking an early 7-point lead, Duke surged ahead in the second half, outscoring them 48-29 and tightening their defense. Tyrese Proctor also contributed with a season-high 20 points.
Now, Duke enjoys a week off before facing Wake Forest next weekend, and it will be interesting to see if Flagg can continue his dominance.
