Sheffield Wednesday remain in contract talks with a few of their players ahead of their pre-season return.
Liam Palmer and Barry Bannan didn’t wait around before putting pen to paper on their contract extensions, while Will Vaulks turned his down in favour of a move to Oxford United.
Sheffield Wednesday now await decisions from Dominic Iorfa, Di’Shon Bernard and Josh Windass, with recent reports claiming the latter was likely to leave Hillsborough.
Bernard is arguably the most important of the three, but his presence at Copa America makes discussions slightly more difficult.
The 23-year-old joined on a free transfer last summer nad has enjoyed an ‘excellent‘ year, while it is likely a number of clubs would be eager to snap him up.
Bernard started in Jamaica’s first Copa America match yesterday and could well be in the United States until the final is held on July 15.
Di’Shon Bernard’s future remains up in the air
The Owls will still be hoping to make progress in their bid to keep him at the club, though journalist Alex Miller has reported that he is yet to make a ‘firm decision’ on his future.
Miller wrote: “No real update, but am again told Di’Shon Bernard has not yet made a firm decision either way on his future. It’s ongoing.
“Still just 23, he made another career stride over the weekend by featuring in a major international comp.”
A potential Sheffield Wednesday exit would be a huge blow
Wednesday’s defence dramatically improved in the second half of the season, with a number of their experienced players making key contributions.
Bernard is arguably the most promising member of the backline though, while he is still months off his 24th birthday.
Given that he was free, the defender was a huge bargain and could well gain a seven-figure price tag if he stays in Yorkshire beyond this summer.
Wednesday should be able to attract potential replacements if he does leave though, but to bring him in for free and offload him for free a year later would be very frustrating.
