Novak Djokovic has commented on the ongoing controversy surrounding Jannik Sinner’s doping case, expressing concerns over the current system and its inconsistencies. Sinner had been at the center of the issue before the US Open when he tested positive for clostebol, a banned substance, during the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. However, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) ruled that Sinner was not at fault, claiming that small traces of the substance entered his body through his former physiotherapist.
Despite this, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) appealed the decision, prompting Djokovic to speak out on the matter. In a press conference ahead of the Shanghai Masters, Djokovic criticized the system, stating that it “was not working well” and had “too many inconsistencies.” He pointed out the involvement of numerous governing bodies in the case and emphasized that the situation was detrimental to the sport.
“I think it’s quite obvious that we have a system that is not working well. There’s way too many inconsistencies, way too many governing bodies involved, and this whole case is not helping our sport at all. I think he has won the three appeals so far that he had, and it must be very tough for him and his team and family,” Djokovic said.
Djokovic also praised Sinner for his continued high-level performances despite the ongoing controversy, acknowledging his impressive form in the face of adversity. “Hopefully, we can go back to tennis, and it’s impressive what he has been doing during this whole process,” Djokovic remarked.
He also expressed hope that the case would be resolved swiftly, as the situation was “not positive” for the sport. “Whatever’s going to happen, I just wish for it to be resolved as soon as possible,” Djokovic added.
The two players have faced each other seven times, with Sinner leading 4-3. Their most recent match was in the semifinals of the Australian Open, where Sinner won in four sets to reach his first Grand Slam final.
Both players are scheduled to compete at the Shanghai Masters, with Djokovic set to face either Alex Michelsen or Bu Yunchaokete, while Sinner will meet Taro Daniel.
