Quarterback Jason Smith from McGill-Toolen in Mobile committed to Auburn on Monday morning, showcasing enough versatility to be categorized as an “athlete” on the Tigers’ recruiting boards.
Both Scout and 247 Sports have granted Smith a four-star rating.
He is the second quarterback and the 15th overall commitment for Auburn’s 2013 signing class, joining quarterback Jeremy Johnson from Carver High in Montgomery, who had previously committed to the Tigers.
Scout considers Smith a four-star prospect at wide receiver, while 247 Sports rates him as a four-star athlete. Rivals assigns him a three-star rating as an athlete and recognizes him as the second-best player in the state. He chose Auburn over other programs, including Alabama, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Arkansas, according to Rivals.
Smith visited Auburn in May and attended a camp on campus in June. A conversation with Auburn offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler played a significant role in his decision to commit to the Tigers. He made his commitment official at his high school, with coverage by AuburnUndercover.com, Inside the Auburn Tigers, and AuburnSports.com.
Standing at 6 feet 1 inch and weighing 187 pounds, Smith threw for 1,307 yards and rushed for 740 yards last season, totaling 20 touchdowns. Scout has rated him a four-star wide receiver, 247 Sports lists him as a four-star athlete, and Rivals has him as a three-star athlete, ranked as the second-best player in the state.
