Alfreton Town play host to Kings Lynn Town on Saturday in National League North as they begin their home fixture programme for the 2024/25 season.
Billy Heath`s men were defeated 3-1 by Southport in to the curtain raiser to the new campaign last Saturday. A below par performance from the Reds saw they trail 3-0 mid way through the second half. Billy Heath took advantage of new regulations for this season which sees the amount of substitutions permitted increased to five.
Adam Lund, Liam Waldock, David Moyo and Billy Whitehouse were introduced to the fray in wholesale changes. These saw a marked improvement in performance and it was indeed Whitehouse who opened Alfreton`s account for the season with a spectacular over head kick. Ofton finished the game strongly with Moyo and Anson going close before Max Hunt was denied by a spectacular save from the Southport keeper.
Billy Heath will be eager to bounce back from opening day disappointment then as Alfreton go in search of their maiden three points of the season.
The Reds boss will be under no illusions however at the difficulty of the task in had posed by visitors Kings Lynn. Since promotion in to the National Leagues in 2019 Alfreton are still looking for their first win against the Linnets (D3 L6)You have to go back more than 8 years for the Reds last win in any competition against the Norfolk outfit when two Adam Priestley goals sealed a 2-0 win in the Third Qualifying Round of the 2016/17 FA Cup.
It will take a top performance to defeat the current Linnets side. While Adam Lakeland`s men had a disappointing season finishing down in 18th only 5 points clear of the relegation trap door. Kings Lynn did finish the last season well however and made the ideal start to the 2024/25 season after recording a 3-1 home win over Warrington Town on Match Day 1. A brace from Gold Omotayo who has re joined the club in the summer along with Tom Hughes secured the win against the Yellows.
Alfreton have only lost 1 of the last 8 first home games of a league season (Brackley 2021) and will be hoping that run is extended at 5pm on Saturday afternoon
