Sheffield Wednesday take on Red Bull Salzburg in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.
Sheffield Wednesday have just three more pre-season friendlies before they kick off their 2024/25 Championship season at home to Plymouth Argyle.
On Saturday afternoon, Sheffield Wednesday take on Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, then face Werder Bremen in Germany before returning to Hillsborough for Liam Palmer’s testimonial vs Leganes.
The new season is quickly coming around and it’ll proceed what’s been a very impressive summer transfer window for the Owls, with nine new signings having arrived.
But new signings will inevitably mean some players falling down the pecking order, and here we look at three who desperately need to impress Danny Rohl this summer, or risk falling out of favour…
Mallik Wilks
The striker was already well down the pecking order going into this summer. Then after arrivals of the likes of Jamal Lowe, Olaf Kobacki, and Charlie McNeill, it seems like Mallik Wilks is completely out of contention.
Josh Windass though recently revealed that Wilks is in ‘incredible shape’ this pre-season and so he could try for a resurrection at Sheffield Wednesday next time round.
But unless he can do something special this summer, it looks like Wilks may even be moved on before the summer transfer deadline on August 30th.
Bambo Diaby
The centre-back came in handy on occasion last season, featuring 34 times in the Championship and starting quite regularly in the first half of the season.
Bambo Diaby lost his place in the XI during the second half of the campaign after coming under criticism, in certain games such as the 4-0 defeat at Southampton in January.
With Di’Shon Bernard having returned, and Rohl likely to want another centre-back with options light, it could see Diaby play a back-up role next season.
