College football fans are ripping the Sugar Bowl referees for blowing a huge penalty call on Thursday.
Notre Dame is thumping Georgia, 20-3, early in the second half on Thursday afternoon. The Fighting Irish forced a turnover right before the end of the first half, allowing quarterback Riley Leonard to complete the first TD pass of the game. Marcus Freeman’s team started off the second half with a bang, too, returning the opening kick for a touchdown.
Still, while Notre Dame has been outplaying Georgia, the Bulldogs have been on the receiving end of some tough calls – or rather, no calls.
The Fighting Irish defense appeared to get away with a blatant pass interference penalty on Georgia’s first drive of the second half. College football fans are blasting the Sugar Bowl officiating crew at the Caesar’s Superdome in New Orleans.
College football fans have quickly taken to X, formerly known as Twitter, during the game.
“How is that not pass interference? These are supposed to be the best officials,” one fan wrote.
“What is going on with refs this season?! I don’t care who wins this game, but how the HELLL was that not pass interference on ND?” one fan added.
“I see Notre Dame bought their own refs. If that wasn’t pass interference then they should stop calling pass interference forever,” one fan added.
“Another pass interference not called. Holding the jersey right in front of the ref,” one fan added.
“I’m a defensive man thru and thru… that was definitely a pass interference,” one fan added.
“A thing many people don’t know is that it’s not pass interference if you tackle the receiver before he can catch the ball,” one fan added.
Georgia will have its work cut out for it in the second half, that’s for sure.
The Georgia vs. Notre Dame College Football Playoff game is airing on ESPN.
