Ian Holloway called Swindon Town’s disallowed goal against Accrington Stanley “one of the strangest” he has seen following their 0-0 draw.
For just the second time this year
Swindon thought they had found the breakthrough in the 43rd minute when Farrend Rawson looked to usher the ball back to his goalkeeper and Harry Smith got around him and headed the ball across for Kabongo Tshimanga to tuck home.
However, the referee opted to disallow the goal as he felt that Smith had fouled the former Morecambe defender when he headed it into the path of Tshimanga.
After the game, Holloway spoke about his frustration with the goal being chalked off as he did not feel there was anything wrong with it.
He said: “I was really pleased with it [the performance] apart from scoring and that is normally what we are pretty good at.
“I think that we did score and I have watched it back and that is the strangest goal that I have had knocked off in weeks, months, years even.
“I couldn’t see anything wrong with it and I have spoken to the assessor, but there you go.
“I haven’t been to see the ref, so I am trying to finish up so I can do that, but what is he going to say?
“‘Oh, I thought I saw this’ – well, just have a look at it mate! Because if what they are doing to Harry most of the time is not a free kick, then how is that a free kick?
“I don’t understand; that is a challenge in the box and their bloke couldn’t wait to go down.
“It is what it is, I am not moaning and I am more than upbeat [about the game].”
Gavin Kilkenny added that he felt disallowing the goal was a very soft decision from what he could see on the pitch and watching it back.
He said: “I have just watched it back in there with Tom [Nichols] and Smudge [Smith] and it looks really soft, to be honest.
“I think that it probably should have been a goal and that is what I am saying as I think that we probably deserved to be 1-0 up going into the break.
“I think that he [the referee] has got that wrong.”
