The Miami Hurricanes have secured a new quarterback.
Carson Beck, formerly of the Georgia Bulldogs, has committed to Miami less than 24 hours after entering the transfer portal. Beck had previously declared for the NFL Draft but was sidelined by a season-ending elbow injury during the SEC Championship against the Texas Longhorns, which kept him out of Georgia’s playoff loss to Notre Dame.
Following Beck’s decision to bypass the NFL Draft and enter the portal, Miami was quickly considered the front-runner to acquire him, with teams like Ohio State and Texas Tech also in the mix. Beck made his decision rapidly, with Pete Nakos of On3, who first reported Beck’s portal entry, speculating that Beck’s NIL deal could be substantial.
“I think it’s safe to say whatever Carson Beck ends up getting is going to surpass anything else we’ve seen in this market so far,” Nakos remarked. “Somebody is going to have to back up the brinks truck for Carson Beck.”
Nakos pointed out that current Miami quarterback Cam Ward, whom Beck will replace, reportedly received between $1.5 million and $2.5 million to transfer to Miami from Washington State. Nakos predicted that Beck’s NIL deal could exceed $3 million.
This move could set a new precedent for high-profile college football players, particularly quarterbacks projected for middle-round NFL Draft selections. If the $3 million figure proves true, it might encourage players to stay another year in school rather than entering the draft immediately.
In 2024, Beck threw for just under 3,500 yards, with 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, doubling his touchdown total from his first season as a starter in 2023. Despite turnovers being an issue, contributing to two of Georgia’s regular-season losses, Beck had a solid year and became one of the most sought-after players in the portal.
It seems Beck had already made up his mind about his next destination, and the Hurricanes are now poised to have a strong 2025 season with him at the helm.
