Caitlin Clark Makes Heartfelt Admission Ahead of Jersey Retirement
The 23-year-old has had a phenomenal season playing for the Indiana Fever and was acclaimed as the WNBA Rookie of the Year. Yet Clark will return to Carver-Hawkeye Arena to be recognized by the school where she left an indelible mark in women’s college basketball.
Caitlin Clark has received a huge honor from her previous franchise Iowa Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes will retire Clark’s No.22 jersey in the upcoming Women’s basketball game against the No.4 USC. The announcement of the jersey retirement was made in April 2024.
The Indiana Fever guard spoke to 247Sports’ David Eickholt about getting caught up in the “emotional” backdrop of her jersey retirement.
“I think it’s hard to probably feel all the emotions until I’m going to be inside of Carver and really see it, and experience that with my family,” Clark said. “Now that I’m not actually going to be playing, I feel like I’ll be more emotional even though I’m not a super emotional person.
“And usually, when we’ve had certain things inside of Carver, I’ve been competing or playing shortly before like something like that… so it’s hard to evoke emotion after you’ve just competed for 40 minutes. … Honestly, I’m very grateful and thankful to have played at a place that loves women’s basketball the way that it does. Just really helped me flourish. It will be really special.”
Clark set 45 Division I records while playing for the Hawkeyes. She carries the record of being the only player in NCAA Division I history to lead, whether for men’s or women’s basketball, to lead their conference in scoring and assists for four straight seasons. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft will begin her second season with the Indiana Fever in May.
