‘I Reached Out to the Roosters’: Why Robson Walked Out on Cowboys

In a move that has rocked Townsville, Reece Robson has revealed he initiated contact with the Sydney Roosters before his exit from the North Queensland Cowboys was finalised.

Speaking candidly about the decision, Robson admitted the call wasn’t easy — but it was necessary.

“I reached out to the Roosters because I wanted clarity on my future,” Robson said. “At this stage of my career, I need to know where I stand and where I can grow.”

Why He Made the Call

Sources close to the situation suggest Robson’s departure wasn’t purely financial. While contract security played a role, the driving force was opportunity — both in terms of leadership and long-term vision.

The Cowboys have been reshaping their roster and salary cap priorities, and Robson reportedly felt the direction didn’t fully align with his ambitions. Rather than waiting for uncertainty to play out, he took control of the process.

Why the Roosters Fit

For the Roosters, the appeal is obvious. Robson brings toughness, elite defensive output, and Origin-level composure around the ruck. In a squad that prides itself on professionalism and big-game experience, his standards match the club’s DNA.

The Tricolours have never been shy about aggressive recruitment, particularly when it comes to elite spine players. Robson’s work rate and competitiveness tick every box.

Cowboys Left to Reset

North Queensland now faces a critical decision in replacing a cornerstone hooker. Robson’s departure leaves more than a positional gap — it removes a cultural leader from the middle of the field.

While the Cowboys publicly backed their recruitment strategy, internally the exit will sting. Losing a player who initiated his own move adds another layer to the narrative.

A Career-Defining Move

For Robson, this is about legacy. He’s entering his prime years and believes the Roosters provide the environment to compete for premierships consistently.

Whether the gamble pays off will unfold over the coming seasons. But one thing is certain — he didn’t wait to be recruited.

He made the first move.
