Fans of the Red Wings won’t like what the most recent GM search announcement reveals

Detroit has an image issue, and Todd McLellan and Dylan Larkin are currently at the heart of an uncomfortable Red Wings reality.

A new report from Elliotte Friedman reveals that the organization’s anxieties extend beyond failing to reach the playoffs or meeting expectations. It directly impacts how the Red Wings are perceived across the NHL.

Detroit concluded the season 41-31-10, earning 92 points, but ended with a 2-6-2 record in its last 10 games.

That finish was upsetting enough. What Friedman says Detroit has found while looking into its management situation is currently the bigger problem.

Friedman stated on 32 Thoughts that the Red Wings had been “shocked and surprised” by how hard it was to convince individuals to play for or be a part of the team.

He stated the issue facing Detroit in even more severe words: “Tell us how we can get back to being…where people want to play for us.”

Beyond the standings, Detroit’s issue is currently.

For a franchise like Detroit’s, it is almost as uncomfortable as it can get. Help on the blue line or another top-six scorer are not all that is needed for this roster.

It indicates a problem with one’s reputation. For Steve Yzerman, the general manager who has been in charge of the hockey operation since 2019, this puts pressure far beyond the next transaction.

The Red Wings were formerly a team that players actively sought out. According to Friedman’s report, management is now asking applicants for assistance in explaining the disappearance of that pull.

Although McLellan is capable of influencing the locker room, deployment, and daily norms, restoring Detroit’s league-wide appeal will require more than just a change in coaching. It affects the organization’s roster development, guidance, and trust.

That’s important to Larkin as well. Detroit’s core can only bear so much of the weight if the team struggles to draw outside talent capable of propelling the roster ahead.

The message becomes even more poignant due to the timing. The Red Wings were left out of a crowded group of teams that moved ahead of them, placing sixth in the Atlantic Division with a -17 goal differential.

That disappointment is amplified by Friedman’s article. Detroit isn’t just trying to improve its lineup anymore. Before anything else, the Red Wings might need to repair their image in the eyes of the rest of the hockey world.
