Dylan Garand Shines as Rangers Shut Out Red Wings in Detroit
The New York Rangers spoiled Detroit’s home opener Friday night, blanking the Red Wings 2-0 to improve to 2-1-0 on the young season.
After falling to Boston earlier in the week, New York responded with a strong defensive performance in the second half of its back-to-back. The victory also provided several noteworthy individual storylines, particularly in the Rangers’ crease and on their blue line.
Dylan Garand Delivers His First NHL Shutout
The biggest story of the night was undoubtedly Dylan Garand.
After an unpredictable week that saw him go from being cut and facing another season in the AHL to suddenly being recalled because of an injury to Joonas Korpisalo, Garand made the most of his opportunity.
The Rangers rookie stopped all 22 shots Detroit sent his way, recording the first shutout of his NHL career.
Garand also handled several difficult chances, including six opportunities classified as medium- or high-danger shots. Detroit still had dangerous offensive weapons capable of creating problems, but the young goaltender remained composed throughout the night.
With Igor Shesterkin established as New York’s starter, the Rangers now have an intriguing option behind him.
Garand’s performance could also intensify the conversation surrounding New York’s goaltending depth after the organization brought Korpisalo in during the offseason.
Sean Durzi Finds His Game
Another major positive came from defenseman Sean Durzi, who delivered one of his strongest performances since joining the Rangers.
Durzi scored the game’s opening goal and repeatedly contributed offensively from the blue line.
He could have potentially finished with two goals, but another Rangers goal involving Oliver Bjorkstrand was wiped out because of an offside play.
The performance was particularly encouraging because Durzi had been one of the newer additions still searching for consistency while several other offseason acquisitions had already settled into their roles.
New York brought Durzi in for precisely this type of contribution: offensive ability from the back end while providing additional support behind Adam Fox.
Against Detroit, he finally showed what the Rangers were hoping to see.
Larkin’s Difficult Home Opener
For Detroit captain Dylan Larkin, the night was considerably more difficult.
Larkin entered the home opener under considerable attention following an offseason dominated by reports surrounding his future with the Red Wings.
The spotlight became even more noticeable during the pregame introductions, when sections of the Detroit crowd booed him.
On the ice, Larkin and the Red Wings were unable to generate enough offense against Garand, ultimately being shut out on home ice.
The situation surrounding Larkin is likely to remain one of Detroit’s biggest storylines as the season progresses.
Rangers Take the Early Advantage
The 2-0 victory gave New York a much-needed response after its loss in Boston and allowed the Rangers to finish the back-to-back with a win.
Garand provided the goaltending, Durzi supplied the offensive spark, and the Rangers’ defensive structure held Detroit scoreless.
For a team still finding its identity early in the season, it was an important performance—and Garand’s emergence could be one of the biggest developments to watch moving forward.
