Quinn Hughes, Simon Edvinsson and NHL Coaching Futures: The Latest Insider Updates

Several major storylines are developing around the NHL, with questions surrounding Quinn Hughes’ future in Minnesota, Simon Edvinsson’s contract situation in Detroit, and several head coaches approaching the final year of their current agreements.

NHL insider Pierre LeBrun provided updates on each situation.

Quinn Hughes Taking His Time in Minnesota

Minnesota Wild general manager Bill Guerin appears willing to remain patient as the organization works toward a long-term agreement with Quinn Hughes.

According to LeBrun, there have already been several discussions between Guerin and Hughes’ agent, Pat Brisson. However, Hughes has yet to give the green light to push negotiations toward a completed extension.

That does not necessarily mean the star defenseman intends to leave Minnesota. Rather, the situation appears to be driven by timing, with Hughes reportedly in no hurry to make a final decision.

Once Hughes is ready to move forward, LeBrun believes negotiations could progress relatively quickly.

For the Wild, however, the situation is far from ideal. Minnesota paid a significant price to acquire Hughes from Vancouver, making the possibility of beginning the season without its new franchise defenseman under contract a major storyline.

Edvinsson Returns to Sweden Amid Contract Stalemate

The situation involving Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson has taken another interesting turn.

The 23-year-old restricted free agent has returned to Sweden and is skating with Frölunda while his contract negotiations with Detroit remain unresolved.

LeBrun described the move as Edvinsson’s way of maintaining his conditioning while the two sides continue working toward an agreement.

At the same time, other NHL teams appear to be monitoring the situation closely.

According to LeBrun, several clubs have contacted Detroit in recent days to indicate that they would be interested in discussing a potential trade if the Red Wings eventually decide to move Edvinsson.

For Detroit, though, interim general manager Sean Horcoff’s priority reportedly remains getting Edvinsson signed rather than exploring trade possibilities.

Edvinsson’s agent, J.P. Barry, has reportedly presented Detroit with several options in recent discussions, leaving the Red Wings to consider their next move.

Despite the stalemate, negotiations have not stopped. The two sides are still communicating regularly as Detroit attempts to find a contract solution.

Several NHL Coaches Entering Contract Years

The coaching landscape is also beginning to take shape.

Colorado recently extended head coach Jared Bednar, following earlier extensions for Martin St. Louis in Montreal, John Hynes in Minnesota, and Ryan Warsofsky in San Jose.

Those moves have significantly reduced the number of NHL head coaches entering the final year of their current contracts.

The remaining names include:

– Joel Quenneville — Anaheim Ducks

– Scott Arniel — Winnipeg Jets

– Rick Bowness — Columbus Blue Jackets

– Andrew Brunette — Nashville Predators

Brunette’s situation is slightly different because Nashville holds a team option for the 2027-28 season.

Bowness also isn’t necessarily facing the same uncertainty as some of the others. He signed a one-year contract with Columbus last spring and has increasingly operated on a season-to-season basis.

Quenneville’s situation stands out because of his extensive coaching rĂ©sumĂ© and reputation around the league. However, LeBrun indicated that there doesn’t appear to be significant concern surrounding his contract situation in Anaheim.

The expectation is that the Ducks will eventually address his future.

With the season underway, the situations involving Hughes, Edvinsson and several NHL coaches will be worth monitoring as teams determine their long-term plans.
