Massive: Defenseman signs just 2 days before the start of the season

After spending much of the offseason waiting for an opportunity, veteran defenseman Logan Stanley has finally found his next NHL destination.

The New York Islanders have agreed to a one-year contract with Stanley, bringing the 27-year-old defenseman into their organization. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman initially reported Sunday morning that the two sides were working toward a deal expected to carry a $1.5 million salary-cap hit. The Islanders later confirmed the signing.

Stanley Brings Size and Physicality

Stanley has built his NHL reputation primarily around his size, physical presence and willingness to play a hard-nosed style.

Most of his NHL career was spent with the Winnipeg Jets after the club selected him 18th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft. His time with the Jets established him as a large defensive option who could add physicality to a team’s blue line.

His situation became more complicated after he moved to the Buffalo Sabres.

Stanley was left out of Buffalo’s lineup for the entirety of the team’s second-round playoff series against the Montreal Canadiens. He was not listed as injured during the series, meaning the decision appeared to be a coaching choice by Lindy Ruff.

That lack of postseason opportunity likely raised questions about where Stanley fit into Buffalo’s plans moving forward.

Islanders Take a Low-Risk Chance

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his recent role, Stanley’s combination of size and physical play gives the Islanders another option on defense.

The one-year commitment also limits the risk for New York.

With the Islanders possessing enough salary-cap flexibility to accommodate the contract, general manager Mathieu Darche was able to add a physically imposing defenseman without making a significant long-term financial commitment.

Stanley’s extended wait for a contract may have suggested that teams were hesitant to give him a larger commitment, but the Islanders have now given him an opportunity to reset his career.

For Stanley, the challenge is straightforward: make the most of his chance in New York and prove that he can once again become a dependable NHL defenseman.

The one-year deal gives both sides an opportunity to see whether the fit can develop into something more.
