Roosters target Martin, Taulagi amid roster overhaul

Sydney Roosters are lining up Liam Martin and Murray Taulagi as key targets to reshape their squad.

Sydney Roosters are targeting high-profile recruits as they prepare for key departures, with Liam Martin and Murray Taulagi emerging as potential signings.

The Roosters are set to lose Mark Nawaqanitawase and Angus Crichton at the end of the season, with both pursuing rugby union ambitions ahead of the next Rugby World Cup.

Their exits are expected to free significant salary cap space as coach Trent Robinson reshapes his squad.

Martin shapes as a prime target despite being contracted to the Penrith Panthers until the end of 2027.

LIAM MARTIN.

The representative forward has become a regular for New South Wales and Australia, but Penrith’s ongoing salary cap pressure could complicate any extension. He will be free to negotiate with rival clubs from November 1 if no new deal is reached.

The Roosters are not alone in their interest. Expansion clubs, including the incoming Perth franchise and PNG-based side, are expected to be active in the market ahead of their planned entry in 2028, increasing competition for elite players.

Reports suggest Martin is open to opportunities elsewhere, adding intrigue to his long-term future.

Taulagi is also on the Roosters’ radar as they look to refresh their outside backs.

The Cowboys winger has started the season strongly, scoring six tries in five games, but is yet to secure a contract extension beyond this year with North Queensland Cowboys.

His representative pedigree and finishing ability make him a logical option to replace Nawaqanitawase, and potentially a longer-term successor to veterans such as Daniel Tupou.

Captain James Tedesco is also nearing the latter stages of his career, signalling a broader transition for the club.

The Roosters have already added depth with off-season recruits and are set to welcome further reinforcements next year. However, securing players of Martin and Taulagi’s calibre would significantly shape the club’s next phase.

With roster turnover looming, the Roosters appear ready to be aggressive in the market.
