Red Wings Refuse to Change Course on Simon Edvinsson Despite Trade Preference
The situation surrounding Simon Edvinsson has taken another turn, but the Detroit Red Wings don’t appear ready to abandon their plans for one of their most important young defensemen.
Reports that Edvinsson would prefer a trade have added another layer of uncertainty to an already complicated contract dispute. Despite that development, Detroit’s position reportedly remains unchanged: the organization wants to find a way to keep Edvinsson rather than move him to another NHL team.
Detroit Still Wants Edvinsson
The Red Wings have made it clear that their priority is getting Edvinsson under contract.
That stance is significant because other teams are reportedly monitoring the situation. Clubs can express interest and explore the possibility of a trade, but Detroit isn’t actively treating the 23-year-old defenseman as a player it wants to move.
For a franchise trying to build around young talent, keeping Edvinsson would represent an important part of that long-term plan.
Contract Length Remains the Major Issue
The biggest obstacle appears to be the structure of Edvinsson’s next contract.
The defenseman is reportedly considering different possibilities, including a shorter-term agreement and a longer commitment.
Detroit, meanwhile, has shown a preference for a bridge deal.
That difference in vision has kept the two sides apart and contributed to Edvinsson’s decision to return to Sweden while negotiations continue.
He has been skating there to maintain his conditioning as the contract stalemate remains unresolved.
Trade Preference Changes the Dynamic
If Edvinsson indeed prefers to continue his career somewhere else, the situation becomes considerably more complicated for Detroit.
The Red Wings now have to balance their desire to retain a key young player with the possibility that he would rather play elsewhere.
However, Detroit still holds an important piece of leverage.
Edvinsson is a restricted free agent, meaning the Red Wings retain his NHL rights and control much of the process surrounding his next contract.
That gives Detroit considerably more flexibility than it would have with an unrestricted free agent.
Detroit Isn’t Backing Away
For now, the message from the Red Wings is straightforward.
Even with Edvinsson’s reported preference for a trade, Detroit isn’t changing course and isn’t publicly making its young defenseman available.
The organization still sees him as an important part of its future.
The longer the contract dispute continues, however, the greater the pressure becomes on both sides to find a solution.
For Detroit, the ideal outcome remains the same: get Edvinsson signed, bring him back into the lineup and move forward with one of the team’s most important young pieces.
