The NHL Just Got Turned Upside Down by Leo Carlsson’s Stunning Offer Sheet

Leo Carlsson signs historic offer sheet that shocks the NHL!

Leo Carlsson is about to become the NHL’s highest-paid player.

The NHL offseason has taken another dramatic turn after the Philadelphia Flyers made a bold attempt to pry away one of the league’s brightest young stars.

Philadelphia has officially signed Anaheim Ducks center Leo Carlsson to a five-year offer sheet worth an eye-popping $18 million per season, a deal that would make the 21-year-old the highest-paid player in the NHL if it goes through. The contract is reportedly loaded with upfront money, with Carlsson expected to receive roughly $39 million during the first year alone, adding significant financial pressure on Anaheim.

The move places the Ducks in a difficult position. Under NHL rules, Anaheim now has seven days to either match the contract and retain Carlsson or decline, allowing him to join the Flyers while receiving four first-round draft picks as compensation.

The aggressive offer comes despite recent confidence from the Ducks’ front office. Insider Elliotte Friedman had reported only days earlier that Anaheim was fully prepared to match any offer sheet presented to Carlsson. Throughout free agency, the Ducks avoided major spending, choosing instead to preserve salary-cap flexibility in anticipation of exactly this kind of challenge.

We have tendered an offer sheet to Anaheim center Leo Carlsson. The offer is a five-year contract worth an average annual value (AAV) of $18M, which would require four of the Flyers first-round draft picks in each of the next four seasons as compensation. https://t.co/nfhD4h6nEc

The latest development also adds another chapter to the growing rivalry between the two organizations. In January 2024, the Flyers shocked the hockey world by trading Cutter Gauthier to Anaheim in exchange for Jamie Drysdale. Reports at the time suggested Gauthier wanted to sign his entry-level contract immediately after his college season to accelerate his contract timeline, but concerns over salary-cap bonus overages contributed to Philadelphia’s hesitation. Anaheim capitalized on the situation, and now the Flyers appear to be returning the favor with one of the most aggressive offer sheets in recent memory.

Although the Ducks entered the offseason with a league-best $35.2 million in available cap space, matching Carlsson’s massive contract would consume a significant portion of that financial cushion. Such a commitment could restrict general manager Pat Verbeek’s ability to strengthen other areas of the roster.

Anaheim also faces additional contract negotiations with key restricted free agents, including Cutter Gauthier and Pavel Mintyukov. If the Ducks choose to match Carlsson’s deal, finding room to secure those players could become much more complicated.

Around the league, speculation has already begun over whether another franchise might respond by targeting Gauthier with an offer sheet of its own—albeit at a much lower salary. Given the unpredictable nature of this offseason, few scenarios seem impossible.

Philadelphia’s decision to heavily front-load the contract appears to be a calculated strategy aimed at testing Anaheim’s financial flexibility beyond just the salary-cap hit. While the Ducks technically have the space to match, the immediate cash commitment and long-term cap implications make the decision far more challenging.

The spotlight now shifts to Anaheim’s front office. With one week to make its choice, the Ducks must determine whether to match the richest offer sheet the NHL has seen in years or accept four first-round picks and watch one of their franchise cornerstones head to Philadelphia.
